Merging Service
SurfStatsLive Merging Module
The SurfStatsLive Merging Module consists of three components the SurfStatsLive
Merging Service (which is a Windows Service), the SurfStatsLive MergeClient
Application and the SurfStatsLive Page Title Lookup Application. The SurfStatsLive
Merging Service controls the SurfStatsLive MergeClient Application and starts it if
it is not running. The MergeClient shuts itself down after once scanning all log
files from all site profile databases. The SurfStatsLive Merging Service then
restarts the MergeClient. The SurfStatsLive MergeClient Application operates by
obtaining a list of profiles from the site profiles database, reading the log sources
associated with the site profiles and populating the Site Profile Databases.
The MergeClient is started by the SurfStatsLive Merging Service at a low priority,
which implies that other server processes which would normally run at a higher
priority will get a more attention from the Operating System.
Note that from one set of log files more than one site profile database can be
populated based on the site profiles created by a Profile Administrator for a
particular Virtual Web Server.
The SurfStatsLive Merging Service is started from the Options tab in Server
Administration. It can also be controlled from the Windows Control Panel
(Administrative Tools Services SurfStatsLive Merging Service).
If the SurfStatsLive Merging Service is stopped it will also send a message to the
SurfStatsLive Merge Monitor Application to shut itself down.
The SurfStatsLive MergeClient should never be directly stopped or started. Stop
and start the SurfStatsLive Merging Service to do this.
SurfStatsLive Title Lookup
The SurfStatsLive Page Title Lookup Application looks up page titles by accessing
the web site associated with a specific site profile. It is started up and shut down
by the SurfStatsLive Title Lookup Service (V2.5+) in a similar fashion as the
SurfStatsLive MergeClient Application is started by the SurfStatsLive Merging
Service. This application accesses the specific web pages as found in log entries,
examines the page title (by looking at the HTML TITLE tag of the web page) and
updates the site profile database accordingly.
